A dental crown is a restorative treatment that fits over the top of a tooth. You can think of a crown as a little tooth-shaped “cap.”
It protects your tooth from additional damage while restoring your ability to talk and chew with ease. At Great Boca Smiles in Boca Raton, FL we take special care to customize each individual crown so it seamlessly blends in with your surrounding teeth. Your tooth crown will resemble your natural teeth so perfectly that onlookers shouldn’t be able to tell your crown isn’t your “real” tooth!
A tooth crown procedure usually requires two appointments in our Boca Raton, FL office. Your first appointment will include taking several highly accurate molds (or impressions) that will be used to create your custom tooth crown. A mold will also be used to create a temporary crown which will stay on your tooth for approximately two weeks until your new dental crown is fabricated by a dental laboratory. While your tooth is numb, the dentist will prepare your tooth by removing any decay and shaping the surface to properly fit the dental crown. Once these details are accomplished, your temporary tooth crown will be placed with temporary cement and your bite will be checked to ensure you are biting properly. At your second appointment in our Boca Raton, FL office, your temporary crown will be removed, the tooth will be cleaned, and your new tooth crown will be carefully placed to ensure the spacing and bite are accurate.

There are various factors that determine how long a crown may last for you including where the crown is placed in your mouth. Some tooth crowns will last a lifetime while others may crack and need to be restored at some point. The main factor in determining the life of a crown is patient home care. At Great Boca Smiles in Boca Raton, FL, we take the time to teach our patients to properly care for their teeth. Regular brushing, flossing and water pick use as well as regular hygiene visits are necessary to maintain natural and restored teeth.
The simple answer is tooth crowns can be applied to various shapes and sizes of teeth, as well as those that have fallen out entirely. If you have a limited amount of your natural tooth left composite resin can be added in layers to build a base for the crown because of its capacity to bond with enamel tooth structure. Composite resin is not robust enough to recreate your entire tooth, but it functions well to create a stable base called a build up. A dental diode laser can be used to gently remove gingival (gum) tissues around a tooth to make it longer. This process is called a gingivectomy.
We provide diverse kinds of dentistry in a calm atmosphere where you are always heard. Our team knows that everyone is different so we craft each experience for each patient.
We greet everyone with a warm, friendly hello and do our best to make your appointment here as pleasant and relaxed as possible.
